Denmark Delivers a Remarkable ESGA Super Seniors Championship 2025
An unforgettable week of top-tier golf, international camaraderie, and outstanding Danish hospitality
When 390 golfers from 19 nations gathered in Denmark for the ESGA Super Seniors Championship 2025 the 14. - 18. of july, the event not only broke participation records but also raised the bar for what a European senior golf tournament can be.
Held across three distinct venues - Mollerup Golfklub (hosting the ESGA Masters 75+ Team Trophy), Lyngbygaard Golfklub (ESGA Super Seniors 65+ Team Championship), and Stensballegaard Golf Club (ESGA Super Seniors 65+ Team Cup) - this year’s edition was the largest and most logistically complex tournament in ESGA’s history. And according to ESGA President Billy Mitchell, Denmark handled it with class, care, and impressive coordination.
“This is the third time Denmark has hosted one of our tournaments, but by far the biggest. It’s remarkable what Dansk Senior Golf has pulled off—especially considering the size of the organization,” said Billy Mitchell. “Three courses, hundreds of players, officials, and guests - it’s an enormous task, and they delivered beautifully.”
ESGA’s Mission in Action
The European Senior Golf Association (ESGA) exists to promote friendship and competition among senior golfers across the continent. Its tournaments - like the Super Seniors Championship - are about more than golf. They are cultural gatherings, where lasting friendships are built alongside sporting excellence.
“Of course competitive golf comes first,” said Mitchell, “but it’s the friendships that make ESGA unique. People have made new friends here and rekindled old ones. That’s part of what senior golf is all about.”
The 2025 event in Denmark embodied that mission in full. In addition to high-level golf on three outstanding courses, players and their partners had time to enjoy the local culture in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city.
“It’s my first time in Jutland, and Aarhus has been a wonderful surprise,” said Mitchell. “Great food, beautiful surroundings, and a very welcoming atmosphere. It’s been a big plus for this event.”
Golf Innovation and Danish Hospitality
The Danish hosts didn’t just rely on hospitality - they also brought new tools and ideas to the table. One of the key innovations was the use of GolfBox for live scoring, helping to unify systems across different countries and offer players and spectators a more accurate and enjoyable experience.
“There were some bumps, as with anything new, but GolfBox worked well. It was a big step forward in streamlining scoring for such a large, international tournament.”
The three clubs also went above and beyond in preparing their courses and facilities. Each club delivered professional-quality experiences, with volunteers, greenkeepers, and club staff working long days to make everything run smoothly. From course signage to custom menus, every detail was considered.
A Model for Future Events
While ESGA continues to grow and evolve, Mitchell emphasizes that bigger isn’t always better. The aim going forward is to maintain quality, community, and efficiency—even if it means dividing future tournaments into smaller segments.
“Denmark proved that such a large event can be done really well. But it’s not about going as big as possible—it’s about delivering excellence. Sometimes smaller is better, but here we saw that nearly 400 people can have a great experience if things are well-planned.”
A Final Toast
With good spirits, great golf, and yes—“amazing beer quality” as Billy Mitchell laughingly pointed out—the 2025 ESGA Super Seniors Championship in Denmark will go down as one of the most successful and memorable in the organization’s history.
“Well done to the Danish association. Well done to the golf clubs. And thank you to everyone involved. This tournament shows what’s possible when passion and organization come together.”
